Yesterday I was part of a delegation that visited the offices of Rep. Peter King in Massapequa Park. We were there to deliver a gift basket of food and flowers provided by immigrant businesses throughout King’s South Shore district.
The visit was organized by LICET, Make the Road New York, CARECEN, and the Sisters of St. Joseph. The gift basket was given to symbolize the many contributions immigrants make to our community. We also presented a card describing each of the items, saying, “Here are some of the many gifts we as immigrants bring.”
Afterward, we spoke with the Congressman’s District Director Anne Rosenfeld and thanked King for writing to John Boehner in support of immigration reform. Carlos Reyes of Make the Road reminded her that at previous meetings King had promised to write an op ed article explaining his support for reform. We reminded her that time is getting short for passage of any reform bill and that King’s influence is vital now.
While the last 10 months have been difficult ones for all of us working for reform, we need to keep the pressure on the House of Representatives to pass bipartisan immigration reform. You can help by calling Peter King at 516-541-4225. Thank him for his support and ask him to write an editorial for a local newspaper explaining why immigration reform is good for Long Island.
