Anger Over Middle Schools

More than 100 parent activists, labor leaders and elected officialsgathered outside city Department of Education headquarters in lower Manhattan yesterday, demanding an overhaul of public middle schools.

“The system that’s in place is not working and has not been working for years,” said Zakiyah Ansari, a mother of two middle-school students in Brooklyn.

The gathering coincided with the release of a scathing report by the New York City Coalition for Educational Justice (Make the Road by Walking is a member), an organization of parent advocacy groups, that accused the Bloomberg administration of neglecting middle schools.

A department spokeswoman said educating middle-school students is “a critical challenge for New York City and throughout the country,” and the agency is committed to lasting reforms.
