Asthmatic Residents To Rally in Front of Dilapidated
Moldy Building, To Present Rat with Asthma Pump on A Silver Platter to
Landlord

Building Has 105 Housing Code Violations, But None for
Mold

Tenants to call on the City to strengthen regulations to
address causes of chronic asthma such a mold and pests

What: Rally and press
conference

Why:Residents of 870 Bedford Avenue have
been living in deplorable conditions with mice, cockroaches and mold. Carmen
Reyes, a resident who suffers from severe asthma, reports that the conditions
have significantly impacted her health. Although Reyes’ living room has over 9
square feet of mold, under the Department of Housing Preservation and
Development’s current policy, it is not enough to constitute a violation of the
housing maintenance code.

Asthmatics will call on the City’s housing and
health agencies to enact enforceable guidelines for safe remediation of mold and
pest problems, stronger response to these problems, better training in the city
agencies responsible for inspection and remediation, and greater education and
outreach about indoor asthma risks. The rally is also a part of
the Grassroots’ Global Justice Alliances’ "One Movement, Many Struggles,"
January 26th world-wide day of protest
