Governor Hochul just announced a deal on the New York State FY 2023 budget, and it woefully misses the mark, prioritizing the needs of billionaires over the needs of our communities.
Over the last two years, immigrant, Black and brown New Yorkers have put their lives on the line to keep New York running. We have called for lawmakers to finally recognize the worth of our labor and ensure a true recovery for all. We have rallied and marched from New York City to Albany to make our demands clear.
Governor Hochul ignored our voices and instead focused on the needs of her donors, upending the budget process to give away nearly a billion dollars of public funds to a multi-billionaire for a football stadium and to roll back criminal justice reforms. She further showed disdain for immigrant communities by refusing to provide funding to excluded workers and spreading misinformation to largely obstruct the expansion of health care and child care to immigrant families. In the midst of an eviction and homelessness crisis, she rejected a program to provide housing vouchers for vulnerable tenants.
We commend the allies who resisted Gov. Hochul’s attempts to cut immigrants out of the budget and stood beside us.
We will continue to fight for justice for New Yorkers who this budget has left behind.
