We’re Suing: Birthright citizenship is a fundamental right!

  • Arlenis Morel Co-Executive Director

We hope you’re hanging in there. We know the past 24 hours have been overwhelming, as heinous actions from the new administration threaten the safety and well-being of so many of us and the people we hold dear. We are ready to fight back!

Yesterday we stood up for a cornerstone of our democracy: birthright citizenship. We joined the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to sue the Trump administration over its Executive Order that seeks to deny babies born after February 19, 2025 the right to U.S. citizenship depending on the immigration status of their parents.

This new order puts immigrant families in harm’s way. It is also unconstitutional.

The ACLU, with support from and in coordination with our legal team, is representing our members and members of partner organizations across the country who could be denied citizenship under this order. We are grateful for the bravery of our members who have taken on this case, and we are prepared to fight alongside them.

Birthright citizenship is enshrined in the Constitution. Every child born in this country is entitled to the same rights as every other; to deny the children of immigrants essential rights is an affront to basic values of fairness, equality, and inclusivity.

Yesterday’s executive orders are an attack on our entire community. We are more committed than ever to fighting tooth and nail for our shared values: that all people, regardless of immigration status, race, gender, zip code, or origin, should have the freedom to thrive.

Our Co-Legal Director, Harold Solis, was on WNYC with Brian Lehrer this morning discussing the executive order. You can hear the full interview here

We’re grateful to have you with us as we face the many fights that lie ahead. Please support our work by starting a recurring gift today.

In solidarity,

— Arlenis Morel, Co-Executive Director
