Advocates [including Make the Road New York] say a man found not guilty in connection with a brawl in Brooklyn should not face deportation.
They rallied on the steps of City Hall Tuesday for Ricardo Muniz.
He was cleared of charges he beat a man with a stick in the 2009 incident.
However, since he’s undocumented, supporters say he’s still in prison, facing deportation.
"New York City Correction should not continue to have a policy of working with ICE to keep innocent people detained in jail cells waiting to be picked up by immigration. Its a completely unfair policy. It should come to an end," said Muniz’ attorney, Deron Castro.
NY1 has reached out to the mayor’s office for comment.
Muniz’s attorney says his client wasn’t the assailant in the 2009 attack, but a victim of gay-bashing.
The incident was never classified as a hate crime.
