BUSHWICK, Brooklyn—Making ends meet isn’t easy for many here, where families work several jobs to keep the lights on and food on the table.

Hundreds of tenants took to the streets Wednesday demanding rents stay affordable, they say they can’t keep up with rising rents.

For sale signs and new development has become the norm. Long time residents are being priced out and don’t know what to do.

“The landlord wants to [raise the rent] more, I can’t afford it,” said Amanda Osegueda, whose lived in the neighborhood for 30 years.

People living in Bushwick say they’ve worked hard to clean up the neighborhood.

Changing the image from crime ridden – to hip and “up-and coming.”

Developers have taken notice – and long time residents – as well as local lawmakers – say families are being forced out.

They called on Albany to strengthen loopholes like the “vacancy bonus” which allows landlords to increase rent up to 20% every time a tenant moves out.

Last night five-alarm fire on Dekalb Ave was fresh on the minds of those rallying today.

The apartments are all rent regulated and went up in flames.

The victims no doubt will have a tough time trying to find apartments at the same price.
