NEW YORK— A vigil was held in Brooklyn over the weekend in memory of a hate crime.**

It was two years ago when two men attacked Ecuadorian immigrant Osvaldo “Jose” Sucuzhanay and his brother Romel. Jose died from the attack.

Prosecutors said the two were targeted because they were Latino and because their attackers believed they were gay.

“To the thousands of people in New York who are afraid of who they are, or how they look: the message is clear that hate crimes will not be tolerated,” Rep. Nydia Valasquez said.

In August, a judge sentenced Hakim Scott to 37 years and Keith Phoenix to 37 years to life in prison.
