Make the Road NY Cheers NYC Council Vote to Override Mayor Adams’ Anti-Housing Veto

NEW YORK (July 13, 2023) – Ahead of the New York City Council’s scheduled vote today to override Mayor Eric Adams’s reckless veto of vital legislation to move New Yorkers from shelters to permanent housing, Make the Road New York member, Manuel Ordóñez, issued the following statement:

“Today, the Council is continuing to lead, while Mayor Adams continues to stand in the way of progress. Approximately 100,000 people sleep in shelters every night, and many of these people have spent well over 400 days waiting for the support they need to access permanent housing. The Council’s smart bills will help fix this grave problem—preventing homelessness for more than 38,000 families and 92,000+ individuals—while producing a potential annual savings of more than $730 million.

It’s extremely frustrating to see the Mayor refuse to listen to his colleagues and our communities, instead choosing to play politics with his veto pen and denying people’s right to shelter. Today we stand with the Council as it continues to take the reins so all New Yorkers have a safe, affordable place to call home.”
