Donation Seeks To Expand English Classes For Immigrants

Queens Councilmember Daniel Dromm presented a $100,000 check Tuesday to a local group [including Make the Road New York] from the Immigrant Opportunities Initiative. The money is part of $4.5 million citywide that will used to help fund English classes for immigrants.

Dromm says he hopes more funding and outreach capabilities will become available in the future.

"It was a long and a hard fight, and the fight will remain because we gotta make sure going forward that our immigrant communities are protected from the cuts the mayor is proposing," Dromm said.

"Seeing that funding is available to help people who are willing to work really hard to improve the quality of their lives for and ultimately improve the quality of our community, this is very important," said K.C. Williams of Queens Community House. In addition to language courses, the money will also be used for legal services for immigrant communities.
