COVID-19 has further exposed and worsened the longstanding inequities of our current healthcare system and the precarity of employment-based health insurance. The proposed self-funded New York Health Act would guarantee healthcare for all, regardless of employment status — and thus is more urgent than ever.
The pandemic has also further demonstrated and intensified the structural inequality in education, housing and jobs. Millions of New Yorkers can’t make rent or put food on the table. Meanwhile, just during the pandemic, New York’s 120 billionaires grew their wealth by an additional $77 billion, and now have a net worth over $600. Yet some powerful NY politicians including Governor Cuomo are calling for both more austerity cuts to public services and further tax breaks for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big corporations. The top 1% already now have the lowest tax burden. The proposed Invest in Our New York Act is a package of 6 bills that end tax breaks for the wealthiest New Yorkers and raise $50 billion to invest in public schools, CUNY & SUNY, housing, workers, youth, and state and local government budget gaps.
