Make the Road New York is grateful for the Simons Foundation, whose support has allowed our organization to launch and sustain an Immigrant Family Science/Math Engagement Project for members of the Make the Road New York community. The Simons Foundation is one of the largest charitable organizations in the United States with a mission to advance the frontiers of research in mathematics and the basic sciences. The foundation supports science through grant funding, support for research and public engagement. Make the Road New York (MRNY) is the largest progressive grassroots immigrant-led organization in New York State. The organization builds the power of immigrant and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services.
The partnership between Simons Foundation and MRNY developed out of a shared desire to increase the awareness and engagement of immigrant communities with math and science. This guide is a product of that partnership. It is intended to help immigrant families access science/math institutions such as museums, parks, gardens, and zoos, community based educational programs, after school programs, tutoring, internships and online resources in order to deepen both parents’ and children’s comfort and engagement with math and science.
We hope that you will find it useful, will go exploring and will learn some things that you never knew. If we can make math and science more exciting and less intimidating then we will have succeeded!
