Hundreds rally for education

ALBANY, N.Y. – Hundreds [including members of Make the Road New York] rallied in front of the governor’s mansion in Albany Saturday. They’re upset with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposed education cuts.

Organizers want Cuomo to extend a tax on the wealthiest three percent of New Yorkers. They say it could make up for the $1.5 billion Cuomo is proposing to cut from schools.

"You have representatives from all over the state. The devastating cuts for New York City will mean ten percent of the teachers will be laid off; ten percent of the classrooms will be closed. That will have a devastating effect to children, and we cannot afford that,” said Robert Jackson, Campaign for Fiscal Equity.

Jackson also says it’s more than layoffs. He says education cuts will mean cuts in arts, music and sports programs too.
