ICE Out of NYC: Protecting Public Safety and New York Families

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

As a result of our community’s advocacy, last year the City of New York enacted legislation to limit the Department of Corrections (DOC)’s cooperation with ICE and thereby protect many New York families and improve public safety.  However, ICE’s new enforcement program, Secure Communities, which was enacted over the objections over Governor Cuomo, has undermined the important new City law in significant ways.  Now, New York City is poised to pass a improve its existing law to respond to ICE’s Secure Communities program and to protect even more New Yorkers against needless deportations that harm our communities.  This new law is one more important step toward our ultimate goal of getting ICE out of New York City.
