IN THE NEWS 2009: October-December Digest

In this issue:

In December, MRNY began a new campaign with the Retail,
Wholesale and Department Store Union to instate living wages for the 3,000+
workers at the Queens Center Mall
in Elmhurst.
While the mall’s owner, the Macerich Company, has already received more than
$48 million in tax breaks and will receive $50 million more in the next few
years, most jobs at the Mall are low-wage, no-benefit jobs, forcing workers to
rely on government aid for survival. MRNY is developing policy that would require all employers who receive
development subsidies to pay living wages
.

Throughout the
fall, MRNY responded to the increasing
onslaught of racially motivated and homophobic hate crimes
in our
communities by organizing mobilizations and forums and working to implement the
"Respect for All" curricula in New
York City
schools.

MRNY is ensuring that immigrant voices are heard
in the national immigration reform debate.
Last
quarter, MRNY members demonstrated in New York
and Washington,
visited with lawmakers, and engaged in nationwide planning sessions. MRNY began
a door-to-door campaign to encourage
full participation of NYC immigrants in the 2010 Census
to further ensure
that the growing contribution of immigrants in this country does not go
unnoticed.
