IN THE NEWS 2010: October-December Digest

At
the turn of the year, Make the Road New York (MRNY) won an extraordinary number
of legislative achievements, thanks to the continued support, generosity and
hard work of our friends and allies. With such an exciting start
to the year, we are looking forward to building on these achievements to
establish dignity and justice for New
York City’s immigrants and working class.

Among
the many highlights include:

  • In what may be our greatest
victory yet, MRNY attorneys, organizers and members conceived of, drafted
    and spearheaded a successful
    campaign to pass the
Wage Theft Prevention Act in New York State. The law, which takes effect
on April 13, will de-incentivize the widespread practice of wage theft in
low-wage industries, and ensure that millions of New Yorkers get paid for
    their work.
  • MRNY’s youth leaders and allies won passage
    of the
Student Safety Act, a new law that promotes real
accountability for police staff stationed inside New York City’s public schools.
  • Won the expansion of the City’s most
    aggressive housing code enforcement
    program to an additional 1200-1600
apartments each year, and a crackdown on violations that trigger asthma.
  • Succeeded at compelling the New York City
    Department of Corrections to end
unlawful and deceptive federal immigration enforcement activities at all of
    their facilities.
