Highlights from this quarter at Make the Road New York:


· In January, Mayor Bloomberg signed into law two new pieces of legislation spearheaded by MRNY and key allies: the Student Safety Act, to provide much needed transparency for NYC’s school discipline policies; and a crack down on dangerous housing conditions that trigger asthma.



· In March, MRNY brought together nearly 1,000 of our members for the Third Annual Community Assembly to present our 2011 policy priorities to dozens of elected officials including, Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez, NY Congressman Anthony Weiner, NYC Comptroller John Liu, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. Officials voiced support for our campaigns and committed to taking action to achieve an equitable New York State.



· At the beginning of April, MRNY’s landmark Wage Theft Prevention Act went into affect. The new state law will protect millions of low-wage workers and ensure that all New Yorkers are paid the minimum wage and overtime benefits they are due.

· MRNY also continued our campaign to cease NYC’s deplorable collaboration with federal immigration enforcement policy, which costs NYC taxpayers tens of millions of dollars every year and violates the rights and safety of thousands of immigrants.
