Make the Road New York began the 2007 school year with a lot to celebrate.  Our partner high school, the Bushwick School for Social Justice, graduated 87% of its first-ever senior class last year, due to the diligent efforts of school staff, BSSJ students, and their families. Previous graduation rates in the Bushwick community hovered at around 20 percent. Make the Road New York also welcomes 2007 BSSJ graduates Santy Zambrano and Adilka Pimental as part-time organizing interns at our Bushwick location. Both young women have been members of our organization since the school’s founding in 2003, when they were incoming ninth graders. Both are currently first-year students at York College.

We also celebrate the opening of our new partner, Pan American International, which supports recent immigrant students in obtaining a high school diploma and moving on to college. Pan American International is a program of the New York City Department of Education, and is currently admitting ninth grade students who have arrived in this country within the past four years and are interested in developing strong English language skills while building on their knowledge of Spanish, exploring Latino heritage and history, and becoming active change-makers in their community.
