Make the Road New York, an activist organization, organized the event. Adilka Pimentel, a lead organizer with the group, said they hoped to honor Garner’s life while continuing calls for changes to policing in the city.

“Every year we just come and honor him,” Pimentel said. “This fight is all our fight. Eric could’ve been one of our family members, but any one of us could be the next Eric.”
