A new, 20,000-square-foot mural in Flushing Meadows Corona Park honors the courageous medical workers battling COVID-19 in the epicenter of the crisis.
“Somos La Luz” by Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada depicts Dr. Ydelfonso Decoo, an immigrant doctor who died while treating COVID-19 patients in New York City. The painting is just a mile from Elmhurst Hospital, which faced an overwhelming surge of patients in March and April.
Rodriguez-Gerarda specializes in large-scale urban art projects, including a 2.5-acre sand painting of President Barack that required 650 tons of sand on a beach in Barcelona.
“Somos La Luz” was commissioned by SOMOS Community Care and the nonprofit Make the Road New York.
