DEPARTMENT OF LABOR TO ANNOUNCE CRACKDOWN ON SUPERMARKETS’ UNLAWFUL
PRACTICE OF HAVING BAGGERS WORK FOR NO BASE WAGE, ONLY TIPS

WORKERS FROM SIX SUPERMARKETS WILL RECEIVE OVER $300,000 IN UNPAID WAGES.


TWO OTHER SUPERMARKETS HAVE BEEN ISSUED ASSESSMENTS FOR CLOSE TO
$400,000. VIOLATING SUPERMARKETS FOUND IN BROOKLYN, QUEENS, MANHATTAN
AND THE BRONX.

WHAT:Workers,
organizers and attorneys from Make the Road New York will stand with
DOL Deputy Commissioner Terri Gerstein and the Retail, Wholesale and
Department Store Union (RWDSU) to announce a series of settlement
agreements for supermarket workers, and a commitment to promote
compliance with labor law throughout the City. Make the Road NY brought
a number of the supermarket cases to the Department of Labor, and has
been working to confront illegal treatment of supermarket workers for
many years.
