The fact that New York City public schools are badly overcrowded is not news. But one Queens school is so jam-packed with students that kids there must eat lunch at 9:30 a.m.

A new report from Make the Road New York, based on New York City Department of Education data, shows that school overcrowding is pervasive in northwest Queens.

More than half of students in that area of the city attend an overcrowded school.

Community School Districts 24 and 30 serve the fastest growing populations of immigrant students in New York.

PS 19, just off the 7 train at Junction Blvd., is one of the most overcrowded schools in the city.

Students there must eat lunch as early as 9:30 a.m. They then complain that they are hungry and unable to concentrate all day. PS 19, and others, lack spaces for science laboratories, gymnasiums, libraries, art and music classes.
