United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew called on new Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott to start his tenure by fixing the citys failed strategy for dealing with public schools.
Mulgrew along with City Council Members Charles Barron and Jumaane Williams, student leaders from the Urban Youth Collaborative and parent leaders from the Coalation of Educational Justice [and members of Make the Road New York], held a press conference at the steps of City Hall to call on major reforms from Walcott.
The Urban Youth Collaborative released a report with data that was highly critical of the Citys school closings policy.
The collective groups want to prevent damage done by the Citys school closings policy and failure to help students in struggling schools.
High School students from some of the struggling and closed schools took part at press conference to offer their personal stories.
