Video: Fire Island cleanup crews protest pay

Fire Island cleanup crews [including members of Make the Road New York] protested their pay today.

Many of the workers hired to clean up Superstorm Sandy debris say they’re being shortchanged. They say they’re being paid less than they were told they’d be paid, and some say their checks have bounced.

Some speculate that the subcontractors are over budget and trying to make ends meet. But a representative from Coastal Environmental says that’s not the case. He says the new rate of pay is accurate and that higher rates of pay were from a previous, canceled government contract.

State Assemblyman Phil Ramos is asking the Suffolk district attorney and the state Labor Department to investigate.
