Video: Residents rally for voter redistricting in Nassau County

A coalition of civic action and immigrant rights groups [including Make the Road New York] rallied in West Hempstead Thursday to call for voter redistricting in Nassau County.

About two dozen Nassau residents gathered in West Hempstead to learn more about how their legislative district lines are drawn following each election.

They say the current system puts the interest of political parties ahead of voters especially in communities of color. The groups have launched a grassroots campaign for a new citizen-led redistricting process that they believe will strengthen the voting power of regular citizens and keep their communities united.

On Monday afternoon coalition leaders say they’ll present a proposal to the Nassau County Legislature on how they think redistricting should be done in the future.

They’re suggesting a commission of three Republicans, three Democrats and three Independents to decide where district lines should be drawn.
