Tensions grew inside the Nassau Legislature today over a proposed map that would re-cut the legislative districts in the county. [MRNY members were there to give testimony against the plan that would disenfranchise communities of color]

Critics raised two concerns regarding the proposed 3rd and 14th districts. The new 3rd District would put Inwood and Elmont in the same district. The new 14th District would stretch all the way from parts of Hempstead and Garden City to Bethpage.

Civil rights attorney Fred Brewington claimed the map was an attempt to split up minority communities.

Frank Moroney, chairman of Nassau’s Advisory Redistricting Commission, says the map had to be done after the last census showed populations had shifted.

A previous plan to redraw the districts was blocked by the New York Court of Appeals. The full legislature vote to implement the new map could happen in two weeks.
