🏠Tenants are struggling; NY needs Good Cause Eviction now

  • Jose Lopez Co-Executive Director

New Yorkers need our state government to protect the rights of renters to remain in their homes by passing Good Cause Eviction Legislation, now!

This Thursday is the last day of the legislative session and state leaders have not acted to protect tenants from rent hikes and evictions. Our members have been traveling to Albany every week, including today, demanding action on Good Cause  Eviction. You can add your voice by calling state leaders now.

In the midst of a crisis for renters, state leaders have chosen not to act. Our members, along with tenants across the state, are suffering as a result of their inaction.

In today’s Gotham Gazette I wrote an op-ed with Senator Julia Salazar and described the crisis faced by tenants, like our member Irene Cepeda. Irene has lived in the same apartment in Bushwick for 22 years and paid her rent on time every month. She is now facing a sudden rent hike of $1,200 per month.

For Irene, this massive rent increase is equivalent to an eviction. Her kids are worried sick about the prospect of moving away from the neighborhood they grew up in. We need Good Cause now to protect tenants like Irene.

In 2019, you helped our members pass some of the strongest tenant protections in our state’s history, and today we need your help once again to pass even stronger protections for tenants who are still vulnerable to greedy landlords and developers. Thank you for making this critical call today.

If you’d like to support our ongoing fights for housing justice, you can donate to ensure this work continues.

Thank you so much for adding your voice, and your support to this fight.

Fight fight fight, housing is a human right!
