Education, Health, & Legal Services

Make the Road New York offers an array of services to both members and non-members.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, & COLLEGE ACCESS

ADULT EDUCATION

  • English for Speakers of Other Languages
  • Food Handlers Certification
  • Citizenship Preparation
  • Health Job Training Program

If interested in any of these classes, please fill out this form.

MRNY typically enrolls students in Citizenship classes 4 times a year and 3 times a year for English and Food Handlers:

  • Late December/early January for all classes starting in January;
  • Late March for all classes starting in April;
  • Late June/early July for Citizenship classes starting in July;
  • Mid July/August for English and Food Handler classes starting in September and Citizenship classes starting in October.

We contact people on the waiting lists when it’s time for intake. Classes fill up quickly so please be sure you sign up early for your preferred start month.

Youth Training and College Access

HEALTH SERVICES

For all Health Services call: 1-866-365-2724. Listen to the options and leave a voicemail. A member of the Health Team will return your call within a few days. We provide the following services:

  • Health Insurance Enrollment Assistance
  • Health Care Navigation & Access
  • TGNCIQ (transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex, and queer) Health Advocacy
  • Medical Debt Reduction Assistance
  • Nutrition Support and Food Pantry
  • Peer Health Coaching & Illness Management
  • Referrals for Rapid HIV Testing
  • SNAP (Food Benefit) Enrollment Assistance

LEGAL SERVICES

To obtain legal assistance with a legal problem, please visit one of our neighborhood community centers or call the numbers listed below. We offer the following services:

Housing: legal support for tenants to avoid eviction and address overdue maintenance, tenant training on housing rights and landlord interactions
Public Benefits: access to Medicaid, food stamps, health insurance, and more
Employment & Workplace Justice: legal assistance with legal issues such as recovery of unpaid wages, accessing workers compensation benefits, and addressing employment discrimination, among others 
Immigration & Action NYC:  legal support and representation on immigration matters, including deportation defense, citizenship, DACA consultations, U-Visas
Civil Rights/TGNCIQ Justice: Know Your Rights training for police interactions and bystander training for responding to anti-trans violence (Queens office only)
Family Law: legal support for custody/visitation, uncontested divorce, adoption, child/spousal support, temporary/permanent orders of protection
