Let’s repeal the #WalkingWhileTrans ban once and for all!

  • Mateo Guerrero-Tabares Trans Justice and Leadership Program Manager

The time to Repeal the #WalkingWhileTrans Ban is now!

This week, members of our Trans Immigrant Project (TrIP) continue to take action to repeal Penal Law 240.37, Loitering for the Purpose of Prostitution.

Black and brown trans women deserve to walk in their neighborhoods without the constant fear of being stopped, frisked and arrested at the discretion of police.

Call NYS leaders and demand they bring the repeal of the Walking While Trans Ban (A.00654/S.02253) to a vote!

As our member Jessica Guaman said, “going out with a sexy blouse and a tight skirt does not mean I’m doing sex workPenal Law 240.37 has to be eliminated because it is used to discriminate against TGNC communities. Our clothes are not evidence!

We are calling on Speaker Heastie & Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins to bring the repeal of the #WalkingWhileTran ban to a vote!

Take action with us this week by calling and tweeting at them. It only takes a couple of minutes.

Our TrIP members also took action outside of Assemblymember Erik Dilan’s office, who has yet to express his support on the repeal. To date, the bill has bipartisan support with 75 co-sponsors in the Assembly and 36 co-sponsors in the Senate. Meanwhile, Assemblymember Dilan remains silent for TGNC communities of Brooklyn.

Take action for Black and brown trans women with us this week and demand Speaker Heastie & Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins bring the repeal to a floor vote when the legislature is next in session.

In Solidarity,

P.S. Text “walk” to 50409 to take further action on this campaign.
