Tenants shut down the NY Capitol today. Here’s why…

I’m in Albany today with 200 Make the Road NY members and 1,000 tenants and homeless New Yorkers from across the Housing Justice for All coalition. We’re calling on state leaders to confront this crisis and finally address it after years of inaction to protect the millions of New Yorkers facing astronomical and rising rents, eviction and homelessness.

Good Cause Eviction would protect 1.6 million renter households across the state from unfair rent hikes and unjust evictions, and the Housing Access Voucher Program would help tens of thousands of families stay in their home or get out of the shelter system and into stable housing.

Winning these critical housing protections is within reach – the Assembly and Senate have both included them in their one state budget!

But real estate is working hard to stop this. They have spent $14 million over the past five years lobbying state leaders in an attempt to block tenant protections, and they are pushing for carve outs that would weaken Good Cause.

New Yorkers need and deserve safe and affordable homes. State leaders must remain steadfast in the face of the powerful real estate industry and pass policies that protect us.

SUPPORT THIS FIGHT TODAY!

We’ll keep making our demands clear in Albany and across the state, until we win.

Thanks for your support!

In solidarity,

– Jennifer Hernandez, Housing Justice Lead Organizer
