Respect and Dignity or All: A Vision for NY’s Working-Class Communities of Color

New York’s immigrant communities and communities of color are under attack. The Trump administration has declared war on immigrants by ending Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from several countries, as well as dramatically increasing immigrant detention and family separation. Trump has put in place heads of the Department of Education, Department of Justice, Housing and Urban Development, Environmental Protection Agency, and throughout the Administration that are intent on dismantling protections for immigrants and working class communities of color., The administration has demonstrated deep contempt for people of color and the working-‐class, through policies designed to harm us. Meanwhile, he has padded the pockets of billionaire cronies—many of whom profit handsomely from Trump’s hateful agenda, whether by financing private prisons and immigrant detention, investing in the border wall, or winning enormous, recklessly-‐awarded hurricane relief contracts that epitomize the neglect of Puerto Rico and its people. Now more than ever, New York State must be a beacon of resistance, with our state government standing up for our rights and needs.
