The production is part of the new Immigrant Community Theater Initiative, a collaboration between Make the Road New York and ID Studio Theater Performance and Research Group, to suppport artistic creations that come from New York City’s vibrant immigrant communities and give voice to the civic agenda of the newest New Yorkers. The original story, published in 1953, tells of a young man who is forced to leave his family and migrate North because of the poverty consuming his small village in Mexico. The personal narratives of the actors and the music of Colombian jazz composer Pablo Mayor animate Rulfo’s universe while bringing to the stage the stories of millions of immigrant New Yorkers uprooted by the global economy.
