Clothing retailer ‘American Eagle Outfitters’ has made all of its New York State locations more transgender-friendly – after an investigation found they were anything but.

Earlier this year, civil rights group “Make the Road New York” sent two actors – and two transgender counterparts – into Manhattan, with fake resumes, to try to get a variety of retail jobs.

‘American Eagle’ did not offer jobs to either transgender applicant, but did offer jobs to both slightly less-qualified non-trans applicants.

Karina Claudio-Betancourtfrom ‘Make the Road’ says the company’s New York stores have changed their hiring policies – and will train all of their employees on how to meet the needs of transgender customers.

Claudio-Betancourt: “In all of their employee contracts and employee manuals they’re going to include information about gender identity and expression, and about using proper pronouns, for example.”

She says based on her group’s investigation, the State Attorney General found American Eagle had violated New York City’s anti-discrimination laws – but the settlement two sides reached will cover the whole state.

Claudio-Betancourt: “They will be training 2000 employees in more than 61 stores they have in the state of New York, so this is really exciting for us.”

Under the terms of the settlement, American Eagle Outfitters did not admit to the findings of Make the Road New York’s investigation. Fellow clothing retailer J.Crew also allegedly refused both trans-applicants and offered jobs to both non-trans applicants – and was the target of a gay community protest in March.
