Report: Car Wash Workers To Unionize

There is reportedly a campaign jumping off Tuesday [led by Make the Road NY] to improve working conditions for New York City’s 1,600 car wash workers by unionizing the work force.

Crains NY Business reports a coalition of labor and community groups wants increase oversight of the industry.

The paper quotes the president of the Central Labor Council who says the workers are “mistreated through unpaid overtime, earning less than minimum wage and exposing them to toxins and chemicals without proper protection.”

If efforts to unionize the workers were to succeed, the leg work would not be over.

Many of the car wash stores are independently owned and the workers would need to negotiate with them individually.
