The state Labor Department
is quietly interviewing retail workers along the busy Knickerbocker Avenue corridor in Brooklyn’s Bushwick section, and Labor Commissioner Patricia
Smith is expected to bring charges next week for minimum wage and overtime
violations. But workers sometimes avoid interviewers because they are
undocumented and fear that the officials are with Immigration and Customs
Enforcement. During a march Saturday, unions and church groups plan to reassure
the workers and spread the word that it’s OK to cooperate. RWDSU and Make the Road by
Walking are participating
